Aldert Mantje

Aldert MantjeAldert Gerardus Johannes Mantje (Velsen, the Netherlands, 1954) is a well known sculptor and painter. From 1980 to 1983 he was enrolled at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

Mantje was involved in a number of collectives including the alternative gallery Aorta (with Harald Vlugt and others), Seymour Likely, The Indoor Land Art Program, the Winston Hotel and more recently: Gang of 4 (G4). G4 works according to the principle of ‘Journalistic painting’. The works interpret current affairs through the eyes of the G4. Symbolic and mysterious works are created to which each member of the collective adds something of his/ her own.

Mantje himself is known for creating realist works with a level of estrangement added, such as his series about Adolf Hitler in every day situations such as: Hitler doing the dishes or in his numerous works with meticulously painted slabs of butcher’s meat.

In his own words: Mantje is longing for the spirit of the eighties which, according to him was more daring.
