Lucas Silawanebessy (Balikpanan (Borneo), 1949) was educated at the academy of Tilburg and works as a sculptor, painter, photographer amongst others. In 1951, after the war of independence, he moved with his parents from Borneo to the Netherlands where they were interned in camps for Indonesian military staff. Much of his work is inspired by his extensive travels and at a later fase in his life by the quest to rediscover his roots. He mixes Indonesian traditions and western art traditions in a unique oeuvre. Silawanebessy has received much international recognition and his works have been inducted into such collections as those of the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Noord Brabants Museum, Den Bosch and numerous institutionele collections.
