Kees van Bohemen

Kees van BohemenCornelis Bernardus (Kees) van Bohemen (1928-1985) was a Dutch painter from The Hague where he also attended the academy from 1943 till 1948.

At first his work could be characterized as abstract expressionist. Later it would evolve into a more figurative and colorful oeuvre. This development was sparked by his travels to America (1966) and Africa (1972). Dynamic paintings of fast cars, athletes and street scenes dominated his work at the time. His African travels resulted in many nature and animal paintings.

In 1957 Kees shared a workspace in Paris with Karel Appel, Bram Bogart and Corneille. In 1958 he joins the Dutch Informal Group with such artists as Armando, Henk Peeters, Jan Schoonhoven and Jan Henderikse who would later found the Dutch Zero movement.

Kees van Bohemen has won several important awards. His work can be found in important collections such as: Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Boymans-van Beuningen museum, Rotterdam and others.
