Ludewien Zweerus
Ludewien Zweerus (Amsterdam, 1949), painter, sculptor and installation artist was enrolled at the Koninklijke Academie Den Haag. She lives in Zutphen and has a studio in Hengelo.
Ludewien Zweerus is the eldest daughter of two well known sculptors: Hedwig Zweerus-Weber and Henk Zweerus, and was born in Amsterdam after the war. her childhood played out against the backdrop of the inspirational artistic atmosphere of the post war years in Amsterdam. Sculptors, painters, musicians, and writers were constantly visiting her parents in their studio on the banks of the river Amstel or in the summer home in the coastal town of Bergen, which is also known for it’s many artists. Some of the more famous artists in the circle included COBRA artists Constant, Karel Appel and Corneille.
The whole family was constantly sculpting, drwaing and painting. And it was to be expected that Ludewien would follow in her parents footsteps and become a sculptor in her own right.
She attended the academy in The Hague with that purpose in mind but found that she was drawn more to working with color and in two dimensions. She would compliment her education in Amersfoort and Driebergen in several other disciplines. Ever since she has worked in her own studio in Hengelo where she also teaches drawing and painting.
The work of Ludewien, mainly acrylic paintings, can be characterized by a rich use of color and a playful treatment of line and composition.
Ludewien has exhibited her work in many well known galleries mainly in Amsterdam, Lochem, Zutphen, Den Haag, Zwolle and Deventer. her work can be found in numerous collections.
