Max Ernst
Maximilian (Max) Ernst (1891-1976) was an important leader in the Dada movement, and in surrealism that he cofounded during the interbellum. Ernst was a painter, sculptor, collagist and conceptual artist. He was fascinated by irrationality, the subconscious and the source of all creativity. Ernst was an independent spirit, an innovator and a provocateur which soon made him the spider in a web of movements from which much of modern art has sprung. He remains a source of inspiration for many (famous) contemporary artists.
