Richard Smeets
Richard Smeets (1955) was born in Gennep, the Netherlands. Hij currently lives and works in Heijen where he is active as a painter and glass painter. From 1973 till 1978 he was enrolled at the Academie Beeldende Kunsten Maastricht. Experiences, dreams and memories form the starting point of his lyrically abstract work. Works by Smeets can be categorized in three periods. In the first of these ‘woman’ is the focal point of his paintings. In the second, Smeets is mainly inspired by his extensive travels to such places as Malaysia and Indonesia, where his mother was born. In the third and final phase, the Dutch landscape comes to the for. Richard Smeets has always been fascinated with roses. He published a book with the title: ‘Over rozen’ (or: ‘On roses’).
